DESIGN PRACTICE 1

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME

SAM COOK

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I think I have developed a number of skills through this module, in particular page layout and design through the use of InDesign. I think I have also developed my understanding of graphic design and the areas with in that that I might like to specialise in, with editorial and page layout being my preferred. I showed this through the speaking from experience book creating a hotdog book, as well as the InDesign double page spread brief. My favourite brief was the speaking from experience brief. I found it challenging as it tested my motivation and time keeping skills.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I really enjoyed the freedom and more self-directed approach to the brief. In the past I have struggled with time keeping and leaving things to the last minute, over the Easter holidays I caught up on my work, it gave me a sense of relief and pride. This really opened my eyes and I decided to try harder to keep up to date with blogging and so on. I have enjoyed most of the briefs in this module, which also aided my self-motivation. I have started using illustrator a lot more referring back to the early workshops; this has helped my skills develop loads. Stepping out of my comfort zone and challenging my self to learn new skills.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I think a strength in my work is my perfectionist attitude, I like things to be just so and perfect. As a result I think the quality of my final pieces is very high. This is a skill that I will capitalise on, as I won’t stop until a product looks professional and high quality. I think another strength my layout and spatial awareness of a layout.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

I think there are weaknesses in my work. I think my time management has improved drastically but at the start of the brief this skill was lacking. As a result I had to work hard over Easter to get everything all up to date when I should have been focussing on current briefs. I think I also need to make sure I develop my work a lot more. As well as this I need to make sure that I blog the developments that I do make, as sometimes I forget about them and my workload looks reduced. Making sure that I blog as I go will improve this, as I will have all of my developments and ideas on my blog.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

·       Next time I will make sure I am always on top of my workload. I will try and remember how it felt to have work produced in advance to the deadline, and not stressing on the final day.
·       In group work I will stand up for my self a lot more and try to take the leadership role more often. I think that sometimes I am worried about upsetting peoples feelings, so in future I will remember that I deserve as much as a say as everyone else in the group.
·       Blogging as I go. I need to start blogging as I go, this will be beneficial as it will be time effective as well as documenting all of my developments in case I lose them later.
·       Researching more relevant and in depth.
·       Self-motivation. This module I have worked a lot harder and as a result are more proud of my final outcomes. I plan to continue this in the future.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
