OUGD505 Study Task: Jackson Rising final outcomes

OUGD505
STUDY TASK
JACKSON RISING
FINAL OUTCOMES

FLYER:

I started the process by creating a 7 row by 11 column grid, I then started relaying the relevant information in to the design considering hierarchy of text.

In the end i decided that this was the most functional design and displayed the information in the most effective and appropriate way. The layout clearly shows the hierarchy of text, with the most important information (the title) being the most recognisable on the page.

CONCERTINA BOOKLET:

The importance of this part of the brief was to create a cohesive concertina book that displayed all the relevant information and worked well as single page, DPS and as a whole, I think i managed this well.

This day long brief has been really beneficial in teaching me about the importance of functionality with in design. It has taught me to always consider the hierarchy of texts and always to consider the context and constraints in which the design format will be viewed in.

OUGD505 Study task: Jackson Rising

OUGD505
STUDY TASK
JACKSON RISING

In a studio session today with Phil and Lorraine we were given a one day brief, which consisted of two parts which can be found below. The exercise was to show form, function, layout, type, and image placement as well as gaining a sense of being confident with layout design by being pressured to work to a time limit. This personally made me work faster, to achieve a good outcome for the task.

The brief:

Jackson Rising

Task 2:
Background:
This text/image heavy layout will ask you to utilise body copy, title, date, and location, heading, sub heading, imagery, indexes, highlighted quotes. The amount of text allows for the use of imagery and the type to serve as the main visual elements.

Brief:
You are to layout and design a 10-page concertina folded brochure for a forth-coming exhibition titled ‘Jackson Rising’ at MoMA, New York. All images, copy and branding are included. You have to create a visually stimulating layout that showcases the artists’ imagery but does not sacrifice important information in this process. The images and information must flow harmoniously and offer a taste of what is to be expected during the exhibition.

Branding elements must be kept to black and white. Images must be unaltered and in colour.

Considerations:
Headings, headlines, body copy, grid, type, colour, image sizing, bleed, margins, flow, audience, narrative, language, purpose, size, external print methods, preparing for print, stock, distribution.

Title: Jackson Rising - Curated by Jenny Dowd
Dates: August 3, 2014 - August 31, 2014
Location: 11 W 53rd St, New York, NY 10019, United States

Introduction:
Four artists met at an artist residency at the Ucross Foundation in 2013, now they come together to inhabit at MoMA, New York.

List of artists:

Ruth Boerefijn
Lindsey Glover
Mayme Kratz
Jenny Dowd

Ruth Boerefijn:
My process is experiential. I make visits beyond my self: to Iceland, to the store where the fishermen buy their supplies, to the library.

The feel of manuscripts, photographs and maps give my hands something to articulate when later, in my studio, they work knotting and looping lengths of fishing line. It loses form over time, and can be reshaped; it is resilient. The line is a symbol of connection, of reaching into the depths for nourishment.
The colored paper is cut from my own drawings from nature-imprinted with other narratives and perceptions-through which I punch holes as a way of forging through them to get to the act of new expression.
Text is also a material with a memory and a shape. I struggle to arrange words so they can articulate beyond history to character, story, felt experience, and new possibility.

Lindsay Glover:
Using multiple projections, Lindsey Glover transforms the Loft into a space for the exploration between perception, memory and experience. She collects photograph and video images that are later re-examined to find parallels in context, all the while focusing on the capture and storage of time.

Mayme Kratz:
Mayme Kratz creates art from the natural life of the desert that surrounds her Phoenix home and studio. Viewing collecting as a way of archiving memory, she assembles a variety of natural forms—tangled birds’ nests, feathers, bones, seeds, snakes, and cicada wings—and captures them submerged in resin to create rhythmic, abstract sculptures and reliefs. “My collected specimens celebrate the endless cycles of change and rebirth in nature,” Kratz has said. In addition to these hanging and freestanding works she has also created a variety of videos and installations, including an interactive outdoor sculpture made of found tumbleweeds meant to disintegrate over time.

Jenny Dowd:
Jenny Dowd explores space and movement with a series of steel and Egyptian Paste vessels. The boats hover, dive and flock overhead while exploring the gallery in a playful dialogue.

LOGO DEVELOPMENT

As a group Danielle and my self decided once we had created a logo and brand identity the rest of the products would be easier to design as we would have a clear design aesthetic.

Danielle's designs:

My designs:

In the end we decided to go with my logo design, The font used is called black out. I chose this font as it is easy to read yet still has a youthful vide, almost asif it has been hand cut.

Colour developments:

For the next stage of the logo development I decided to overlay some of the marbling we used, i adjusted the hues in photoshop to show a range of options to show to Danielle.

This is the colour that i thought would be most appropriate to the brief. The colours connote nature and eco friendliness. Danielle also agreed with me. We decided on the 2nd logo as our final as it will work across more platforms and is the most eye catching.

MARBLE EXPERIMENTS

For the design aesthetic we decided on Danielle conducted research in to paper marbling. She found a technique of spraying shaving foam on to a piece of paper, then spreading acrylic ink in to shaving foam and mixing the two using a spoon. The next step is to form a relief print by firmly pressing a fresh piece of paper on top of the mixture. We met up and did some prints, below are the end results. I think these will work really well in our final designs, especially the prints with green and blue earth tones.

RESEARCH BOOK LAYOUTS

To start of the process I created some single page layouts. As my book is based on modernist architecture I plan to use grids and canon to give the final layouts a structured uniformed design.

TARGET AUDIENCE

After meeting up on Friday, we thought it was appropriate at this stage of the brief to select a final target audience, after researching throughout the week on the most appropriate as this would would inform our later design decisions.

the mind maps created with emphasis on children, and the possible route to target them, for example, through schools. We think there is much scope within this idea for experimentation. We have also collated a list of further research topics to look at over the weekend, before starting ideas and development on Monday.

OUGD503 Responsive: Secret 7" Lorde

SECRET 7"
LORDE

For this brief I focused on specific lyric of the song Team by Lorde “We live in cities you’ll never see on screen, Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things, Living in ruins of a palace within my dreams” The lyrics conjured up images of Hashima Island. This was the driving force behind the concept and end product.

Whilst in suffolk i took a number of photos that I think fit the aesthetic that i am going for. Above are two of the images that i am considering using for the final resolution.

FINAL DESIGN:

I am really pleased with this design, I think it clearly shows the concept that I created. The grainy texture of the cover adds an eery element to the design, this echoes Lorde's haunting voice and gritty lyrics. I think that I maybe could have spent more time developing this design.
