OUGD505: Time management workshop

TIME MANAGEMENT
WORKSHOP

For todays session we were set the task of creating a calendar and planning our time for the new brief. I created a digital frame and left the boxes clear so that I could write the relevant information I needed. I decided to create plans for 2 months at a time, so not to bombard my self with the amount of work I have to do.

This task was really useful of me, I find it hard to make the most of my time and often feel daunted by the amount of work I have to do, breaking it down in to manageable chunks. Breaking down the work also makes it seem more manageable and having personal targets to meet will help me manage the work load. As a visual learner it will really help me to be able to visualise what I have to do and when I need to do it by.

OUGD505: Design board Workshop

DESIGN BOARD WORKSHOP
This workshop was a crit on our concept boards that we had produced in preparation to the task this morning. We also brought our design boards from previous modules. The point of the session was to strengthen our boards and make them the best they could be. We sat in groups around a table.

The first stage of the session was addressing what should and shouldn't be involved in design boards.

What should be on design boards:

- Board numbers

- Final outcomes

- High resolution images

- Consistent layout

What shouldn't be on design boards:

- Initial sketches (when not appropriate)

- 1st person e.g. I chose this because..

- Spelling mistakes

- Food stains, water marks, creases

- Print problems/ print resolution

- Too much text (TLDR)

- Scrapbook (Too little to no text on boards)

We were then told to swap design boards and crit each other, paying particular attention to spelling mistakes, grammar, layout and the lists above.

Some of the general feed back that I got across all of my boards was the lack of page numbers, page numbers are instrumental in helping a designer to sell the message efficiently. The lack of page meant that it was tricky for people to navigate between boards, it also meant that people often saw the final product before understanding the concept.

ELBOW

The concept behind this brief was to focus on the bar featured on the song. During my research in to the lyrics of the song I found out that the lyrics "There's a hole in my neighbourhood Down which of late I cannot help but fall" refer to a bar in manchester called the temple. The song was written for a close friend of the band that passed he is refered to as "the seldom seen kid"

This image represents the three band members, The red spiral represents the friend they have lost. The spiral also represents the spiral of depression and hurt expressed throughout the song.

FINAL DESIGN:

Over all i am happy with the end resolution. I think it is a conceptual and interpretive representation of the song. I also wanted to created art work for the Vinyl completely different from what Elbow currently have as their art work has a very distinctive style.
